As she regains her memories, Bayonetta realizes that she is an Umbra Witch, a clan of magic practitioners that originally gained their power from Demons. After rising from her 500-year slumber, Bayonetta finds that she is in possession of one of the Eyes of the World and travels to Vigrid to search for the other, as an informant named Enzo told her that finding it is the key to Bayonetta regaining her memories. The original Bayonetta mainly takes place in a city named Vigrid, a fictional city in Europe that is also referred to as the "City of Deja Vu". As the player progresses through the game, Bayonetta begins to remember who she is and learns how she connects to the greater story.
